GENERAL REMINDERS/HIGHLIGHTS:
· Tuesday, October 29: Mix It Up Day. Students are encouraged to “Mix It up” and wear Shuksan Pride gear or a “mixed up” or “wacky” outfit as long as it follows our Shuksan dress code. Halloween costumes are NOT to be worn to school at any point this week.
· Tuesday, October 29: Picture Retake Day
· Wednesday, October 30: 3:00 Dismissal
· Friday, November 1: Shuksan Pride gear orders are due. Your student’s first period teacher has more information!
· PTSA: Please join our PTSA. You DO NOT need to commit to any volunteering or extra time to be a member of our PTSA. $10.00 for an individual, $18.00 for a family. Contact our front office for details.
· Stamps: Please check your child’s planner every night. A blue stamp means they met expectations for completed work or student success attributes in class. A red stamp means they did not meet expectations. If there is no stamp, it means the teacher did not stamp planners in class that day. You should have seen stamps for all classes this week.
· Late Night Open Swim: The Arne Hanna Aquatic Center is hosting an open swim for middle-schoolers! Friday nights from 8:00pm – 10:00pm a safe and supervised setting for your child to spend their Friday evening with friends. FREE!
Fridays in November: 8th, 15th, 22nd and December: 6th, 13th.
· Art Club: Art club takes place every Wednesday from 8:00AM – 9:00AM. Students can still join! Sign up in the front office.
· Social Action Club: Wednesday at 8:00 am and Thursday after school in Mrs. Strow’s room!
· Sports: Floor Exercise & Dance: November 7th – January 17th
This is a “pre-winter” sport. Deadline for paperwork is November 1. See the front office for paperwork. Must purchase an ASB card ($10) to participate.

I sometimes wonder how many people read this weekly update... please email me at: [email protected] and let me know if you find this information helpful. I will reward your student with $5 classroom economy dollars they can use to buy pens, pencils, gum, etc.
Language Arts:
Students will complete Crossword Puzzle Vocabulary and Spelling Lessons 7-9.
-Please ensure your student is reading five nights per week for at least 30 minutes and recording their reading on their "Weekly At-Home DPL Reading Log #8". Weekly Reading Logs are due every Tuesday.
-Students can continue collecting visuals (photos, ticket stubs, invitations, cards) for their "Where I'm From" collage that will accompany their poem.
Social Studies:
- Students will complete a team time challenge persuasive poster for their assigned Cultural Universal (Government/Laws/Rules, Economics, Communication/Language, Education/Learning, Transportation, Religion/Belief System, Family/Friends, Art, Recreation/Entertainment). By Friday your student should be able to tell you all about the importance of each Universal.

Language Arts:
Students will continue to read for 30 minutes each night and record their reading on their Weekly Reading Log that is due each Monday. I have edited the homework sheets to be a full page, hole punched, and ready for an organized home in your student’s binder. Please help remind your student that this is an important piece of growing as a reader, and look over their completed log before they turn it in on Mondays.
We will be continuing to work toward writing personal narratives this week by creating a Memory Map. Students are really excited about this and are doing a great job! Students are expanding on their topic incident (“an incident that changed me”), using sensory details and pictures to visually prewrite their narrative.
Learning Targets:
-I can use sensory language to enhance my writing.
-I can explore using dialogue in my writing.
-I can read 30 minutes at home each day and record my thoughts on my weekly Reading Log each evening.
Talking Points:
-Ask to see your student's weekly Reading Log and talk to them about the main conflict in the chapter book they are reading.
-Ask your student to use sensory language to describe their classroom, bedroom, school bus/vehicle!

Content Overview: We are continuing our study of populations and ecosystems with the mini-ecosystems in the classroom. This week we are focusing on interactions between organisms and other parts of the mini-ecosystems.

· I can record scientific observations about the organisms in the mini-ecosystems.
· I can explain and identify interactions occurring in ecosystems.
Talking Points:
· Ask what is happening in the Milkweed Bug habitats and mini-ecosystems in our classroom.
· Discuss the assignment, "Teach a Topic: Mini-ecosystems: Aquarium" with your child.

Content Overview
Students completed their Word Processing Assessments last week. This week, students will demonstrate their current PowerPoint skills by modifying a presentation that needs some improvement. We will also discuss some “do’s and don’ts” of PowerPoint presentations before launching into a student created project the following week.

· I can demonstrate basic PowerPoint skills by modifying an existing PowerPoint
· I can share what I know about PowerPoint with another student

We’ll begin the week learning different drawing techniques, including a contour line drawing of a still life. Developing drawing skills will help students with their 3-D drawings for their clay project. The clay project will focus on the folk art from Oaxaca, Mexico, known for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns.

* I can use different drawing techniques, including contour lines.
* I can include highlights and a range of middle values in my drawing.
* I can use a variety of clay hand-building techniques.
* I can apply my knowledge of Oaxaca, Mexico to my artwork.
